Options can be prepended with '-no-' to reverse the action (-no-McWord5 switches off that option) This programme expects RTF (Rich Text Format) documents typeset in Cun'eiType1 and/or Mari, both assyriological transcription Type1 fonts made for use on the Macintosh. Documents created on a system without these fonts installed, or not created on a Macintosh are rejected. This programme's purpose is to typeset such documents in the Palatino Nisaba and Palatino Cuneitype font families, fonts that ensure perfect exchangeability between Mac and PC. Because Cun'ei- Type1 and Mari both use a very peculiar encoding (character order), one that in fact risks to no longer work under a future release of the Mac OS and/or ATM, extensive changes are necessary. This can in principle be done on the Macintosh in a capable wordprocessor. On a PC, this will be impossible, because the automatic conversion of a document (recognised as originating on a Mac) into PC format will render it useless. This programme reads the RTF, makes the required character and font changes, optionally converting some of the characters that don't exist on the PC into visually similar ones, and writes the result to the standard output. It can be directed to any file, using the OS's facilities. The result is another RTF file, w h i c h i s s t i l l i n M a c i n t o s h c o d i n g, and can thus be used in your wordprocessor, on either Mac or PC. This might ensure the best Mac/PC conversion (whatever), but if your wordpro- cessor does not do the conversions (Word97 on Windows 95 does not always...), the -Mac2PC option enables this conversion as an additional, final operation. Similarly, PC-to-Mac conversion can be selected with the -PC2Mac option. If you only want to convert between these 2 platforms, give the - Platform option. The platform translation without conversion does not currently handle charac- ters that do not map to a character on the target platform! If your RTF files were created by a Word for Macintosh version 5 or older, try the -McWord5 option (especially if you don't want to use -Mac2PC). RTF has canonical names for a few special characters, like \ldblquote for the left (opening) double quote. Some programmes interpret these names differently in different versions: e.g. the French MS Word97 version will change the left double quote into a left guillemet (without any option to switch off that "feature"). Therefore, the -NoNames option is on by default, meaning that no canonical names are written, but hexadecimal codes instead. This preserves the actual character in all programmes I tested. You can opt to generate canonical names by using the -no-NoNames option... The programme's default behaviour is to read a single source file (or standard input), and write the converted result on standard output. It is also possible to convert a batch of files in a single invocation. With the -DestDir option, one can specifiy a destination directory. Every input file specified on the commandline (e.g. *.rtf) will be converted, and the result will be stored under the same name in the destination directory. (C) R.J.V.
